CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Village of Croton has “deferred” Halloween because of hazardous conditions on many roadways, after Saturday’s snowstorm. Many neighborhoods will be extremely dark because of the lack of street lighting, and some streets still have downed trees and wires, which could be live.

The village has published a list of streets with low-hanging wires or trees overhead, followed by a list of streets where there is no power. Village officials issued an email alert to residents, which read, “we now believe that it is not safe to go trick-or treating in the village and school community this evening, Monday, October 31,” and that they would soon suggest a later date to trick or treat.

“It’s a very difficult thing to explain that a holiday is deferred,” said parent Ron Maran. “You get into this argument about, ‘But today is Halloween, how could it be a different day?’ Then you have a discussion about who’s doing it and who’s not,” said Maran.

Other local communities, such as Cortlandt, have suggested attending a town sponsored Halloween party, instead of trick or treating around downed wires and tree limbs. Many elementary school Halloween parades were de facto cancelled today, since a number of local school districts cancelled school.
